SOME CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS…

In the past few weeks, I like many, have been distracted with all the preparations that go into this Christmas season. In order to redirect my heart and mind, I have repeatedly read through Luke chapters 1 and 2. In doing so, I was challenged by the heartfelt words of Mary.

Mary’s Song

And Mary said: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him,  from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful  to Abraham and his descendants forever,  just as he promised our ancestors.Luke 1:46-55

In these verses, we catch a glimpse into the heart of Mary, the young Jewish woman chosen by God to carry his Son.

  •  Mary’s heart was filled with praise to the Lord: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
  • Mary’s heart was filled with the acknowledgement of God’s mindfulness and attentiveness toward her: …for he has been mindful of his servant.
  • Mary’s heart was filled with the proclamation of His goodness: for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.
  •  Mary’s heart was filled with the recognition of His mercy: His mercy extends to those who fear him.
  •  Mary’s heart was filled with the acknowledgement of His power: He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
  •  Mary’s heart was filled with the proclamation of His provisions: He has filled the hungry with good things…
  •  Mary’s heart was filled with the pronouncement of His help and mercy:He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever…
  •  Mary’s heart was filled with adoration for her promise keeping God: just as he promised our ancestors.

As you approach Christmas Day, take time to read Mary’s Song. I pray your heart will be challenged by her words of praise, acknowledgement, proclamation, recognition, pronouncement, and adoration for the One who came as a baby and died as your Savior! Praying you have a blessed Christmas and New Year!
